Edo 2020: 35 Political Parties Adopt Obaseki As SOLE Candidate For Guber Election

The Social Democratic Party, SDP, and All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA are leading 33 other parties and political associations to endorse Governor Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu for a second term ahead of the September 19 Governorship election in the Edo State.

The thirty-five parties which include registered and recently de-registered political parties in Edo State on Friday joined their structures together in order to ensure the re-election of the incumbent governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy for another four years.

State chairman of the (SDP) who is also the leader of the coalition of political parties, (CPP) Hon Collins Dara Oreruan, during a press conference in Benin City, said the coalition was fully on ground to make sure that the re-election of Obaseki was achieved.

According to him, “Instead of acting as individuals, it will be more effective to support the governor as a block with our existing party structure across the state.”

Oreruan also noted that they had advised their individual governorship aspirants to withdraw and join hands with Obaseki to build on the growth and developmental legacies and foundation he has laid in his first tenure.

”CPP shall synergize with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to mobilize the voter at grassroots on the reason why his excellency should be returned as governor,” he added.

He noted that the CPP grassroots campaign would be issue-based, highlighting the visible project and programs of Obaseki administration devoid of lies, false propaganda, insults and character assassination, unfounded and bias political innuendo that breeds hatred, malice, and violence.

”Our support for Obaseki is total, progressive and focused on a better life for the people of Edo State,” he added.

Earlier, the CPP Secretary, Comrade Shadrack Udagbai told Journalists that SDP, AAC, DPP, KOWA, and 31 others have concluded plans to collapse their structure for Obaseki.

Governor Obaseki on June 19, 2020, had dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a week after he was screened out and declared unfit to participate in the APC primary election.

The governor following his defection into the PDP picked up his membership card at the party’s secretariat in Benin City, the state capital.

Addressing party officials, the governor said he automatically becomes the PDP leader in the state following his defection and reiterated his commitment to providing what he described as quality leadership.

He later emerged as the party’s flagbearer after other aspirants running against him stepped down.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu later emerged the candidate of the APC.

The Edo gubernatorial election is slated to hold September 19.
