UNIBEN Students Blocked Their VC As NANS President Split Fire Over Proscription Of Union.

The president of National Association of Nigerian Students- NANS, Comr Sunday Asefon storms UNIBEN yesterday at the expiration of his five days warning to the university management.

Asefon earlier threatened the university management on his Facebook page saying, “After the Celebration of NANS National Secretariat by EKSU Management, the Revolutionary SECRETARIAT OF NANS will be Relocating to UNIBEN to seek for Immediate Reinstatement of the BANNED STUDENTS UNION.

“Tell the UNIBEN VC that we are coming, this is era of SCIENTIFIC ALUTA WITH DIPLOMACY” he concluded.

According to the statement made available by the University PRO, Benedicta Ehanere, it was claimed therein that the Students’ Union of the university “persistently engaged in subversive activities including incitement of other students to disobey lawful instructions by the school authorities. This is in spite of concerted efforts by the management, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, to provide their basic needs of water and electricity, as well as enhanced infrastructure for learning.

Consequently, the account of the Union has been suspended and their secretariat sealed. All members of the erstwhile Union executives are to hand over their Students’ Union Identity Cards to the Chief Security Officer of the university immediately. They are also to vacate the privileged hostel accommodations accorded them latest 6:00pm on Tuesday, 30th March, 2021,” the statement added.

Students of the university yesterday blocked the convoy of the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salam over the suspension of their union. The protesting students alleged the management of the university of a ploy to use the hostel accommodations of the school to host athletes coming for the National Sports Festival holding in Benin City, the state capital on April 4.

In solidarity with the protesters, the Revolutionary President of NANS, Comr Sunday Asefon, condemned the action of the university management, saying he’s in total support of the “reasonable demands” of UNIBEN students.
