At least one person died died while five others sustained serious injuries as a businessman was sharing Ramadan gifts to beggars in Katsina State on Saturday.
It was gathered that the compaction started after beggars from the state and the neighbouring Niger Republic stormed the house of the Katsina based businessman to collect a portion of food and money gift.
However, as a result of the impatience of the overzealous beggars who could not wait for their turn, they began to fall upon each other in the struggle, leading to the casualty recorded.
When contacted on the development on Sunday, the spokesman for the Katsina State Police Command, Gambo Isah, said he would not be able to respond to the incident yet as at the time.
A senior police officer who pleaded for anonymity, however, confirmed the incident. He said: “Yes, it’s true but we have taken the necessary precautions to avert a recurrence.”
