An old African proverb proclaims, “It is the young trees that make up the forest.” What this means in the present context is that Africa’s youth will determine its future. Indeed, Africa will not rise unless young people provide leadership and leverage their tech-savviness to mobilise for the realisation of better policies – policies that promote inclusive development.
This aptly describes what is about to happen as Ondo State indigenes are preparing to go to the polls and pick who will rule the state for the next four years.
The state is eagerly anticipating the upcoming gubernatorial election in 2024, and one name that has sparked considerable interest is John Akinmurele.
Renowned for his unwavering commitment to good governance and social values.
Young, Vibrant, Bold, Intelligent and Transparent, Akinmurele brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for human and community development to the forefront of his campaign.
“It didn’t just start today, it’s in my blood, I’m an enthusiast when it comes to good governance. I frown when things are not going the way it should even when the resources are available. It’s time power changes hands, Ondo State youths are eager to have a young leader, a youth who can liberate them, a youth who knows the nitty gritty of governance, a youth who can act smoothly as a link between the old and the young ones.
“I’m genuinely and courageously prepared. I am available to be that instrument in the hands of the Almighty God to restore liveliness, responsiveness, patriotism, shared prosperity, human capital development, community development, social services, welfare, infrastructural revolution, rural and urban development, happiness and many more to Ondo State come 2024.
Being an indigene of Ilutitun in Okitipupa Local Government Area in the South Senatorial District of the State, I do not believe that I’m swimming against the tide in the sense that many stakeholders are of the opinion that power should shift to the South.
In all ramification, I’m a vessel prepared and preserved by God to take Ondo State to a destination of political and economic stability,” Akinmurele explained.
For Akinmurele, the journey to leadership didn’t just start but from his early years in secondary school where he exhibited exceptional qualities as the Health Prefect at Independence Grammar School, Ondo.
Even in his native community of Ilutitun, Okitipupa Local Government Area, he displayed an unwavering commitment to service, his optimism, courage, faithfulness, and forthrightness have always been commendable traits that inspire those around him.
“I didn’t just wake thinking of contesting governorship but the passion to make changes, the thirst to introduce better governance, and the zeal to see an Ondo State of my dream actually prompted me.
With an impressive thirteen-year tenure in the State Security Service (SSS), also known as the Department of State Services (DSS) Nigeria, Akinmurele held several positions of high responsibility before voluntarily resigning. His extensive service took him across all thirty-six states of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where he served as a Security Advisor in the Presidential Amnesty Program (PAP), as well as the Federal Ministry of Health as a Security Advisor to the Minister. Notably, he also served as the Security Intelligence Chief of Gassol Local Government Area in Taraba State.
Akinmurele’s achievements speak volumes about his dedication to social and community development. During his time as President of the Students’ Union at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, his visionary leadership caught the attention of the late Governor Olusegun Agagu, who identified Akinmurele as a rising star in the political landscape. Under his administration, the Students’ Welfare Transport Scheme and Students’ Welfare Insurance Scheme were initiated, revolutionizing student support systems in tertiary institutions across the state. Similar accolades followed his tenure as Deputy Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Students’ Union Government at Ondo State Polytechnic, now Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.
The level of insecurity is increasing by the day and has recently extended to the south is there any preparation to curb this?

Notably, I also served as the Security Intelligence Chief of Gassol Local Government Area in Taraba State, I don’t think security in Ondo State should be a problem with my experience and the aforementioned criteria.”
Talking about his optimism even when some moneybags tend to intimidate, undeterred and determined Akinmurel said;
“My view on the effect of political desperation and inordinate ambition which is believed by some quarters as fueling the crisis in Ondo state. And I immediately talked about positive energy. If some persons are desperate to cause a crisis because of any reason, whether ambition or greed. Why can’t some of us be passionate and determined or ‘desperate’ enough to prevent evil? In this case, we need more positive energy to resist all these evil desperations; vote buying, official malpractices, imposition, compromised by INEC staff and the likes.
“The ordeal of virtue is to resist all temptation to evil” for instance, the slogan of dibo ko sebe, meaning (sell your vote for a pot of soup) started/popularised in Ondo State, who says we cannot also reverse the trend from Ondo state too? I know and believe that we can enthrone a new Ondo State together.
“Evil triumphs when good men do nothing” Thomas Jefferson. We need an army of desperate good people, those old men, young men, old women and young women that will intentionally of God, I’m fully prepared to win this race.”
