Popular Nigerian Gospel Singer, Bunmi Omije-Oju Is Dead

Nigerian gospel music community is mourning at the moment as one of their own, popular Nigerian gospel musician, Bunmi Adeoye Akinnanu, widely known by her stage name Omije Ojumi, has passed away.

According to available information, the gospel singer died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness linked to a leg ailment. Her death comes months after she publicly appealed for prayers and divine healing over the condition.

In 2025, a video of Akinnanu from a church service at G. F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, circulated widely on social media. In the footage, the singer was seen seated with her leg stretched out while prayers were offered on her behalf.

During the service, a cleric revealed that she had been experiencing persistent bleeding from the affected leg, prompting intense intercessory prayers from the congregation.

Akinnanu rose to prominence in the early 2000s after leaving a successful career in the banking sector to pursue gospel music. Her stage name, Omije Oju Mi (translated as Tears of My Eyes), was derived from her debut album, which brought her widespread recognition.

She went on to release several notable albums, including Dabira, Alatilehin, Ma Sunkun Mo, and Testimony. She was also the leader of the Omije Ojumi Gospel International Music Band.

Academically, Akinnanu studied Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at Lagos State University (LASU) after attending Lagos State Polytechnic. She reportedly worked in the banking industry for over a decade before fully transitioning into gospel music.

Known for blending traditional and contemporary gospel sounds, Omije Oju Mi built a loyal following with her inspirational songs centered on faith, perseverance, and trust in God. Her passing marks a significant loss to the industry.
