Senator Abaribe Dumps APGA, Joins ADC

Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The announcement, made on Tuesday, December 31, 2025, brings an end to months of speculation and internal conflicts within APGA that had plagued the senator’s relationship with the party.

In a statement, Abaribe explained his decision: “After wide consultations, I have taken the decision to formally resign from APGA and align with the African Democratic Congress, which provides a clearer vision for good governance and national renewal.”

He cited irreconcilable differences with APGA’s leadership, including disputes over internal democracy, candidate selection, and the party’s strategic direction in Abia State.

Sources indicate Abaribe was particularly dissatisfied with decisions he viewed as compromising APGA’s independence and founding principles.

The defection follows a turbulent period earlier in 2025, when APGA’s Abia State chapter issued a 24-hour ultimatum in September for Abaribe to clarify alleged ties to ADC.

The party subsequently suspended him indefinitely for anti-party activities after he failed to respond satisfactorily.

Abaribe, a veteran politician and former Deputy Governor of Abia State, had been one of APGA’s most prominent national figures since defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 to secure his current Senate term.

His move to ADC aligns with broader discussions among opposition leaders about consolidating on the
platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
