According to a report by Sky News, on Sunday January 4, 2025, China has issued a forceful statement demanding the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, following what Beijing described as their “forcible” removal by U.S. military forces.
The Chinese foreign ministry released the statement calling for Maduro’s release after reports emerged of the couple’s detention and transfer out of Venezuela. A ministry spokesperson characterized the situation as a serious international incident warranting immediate action.
According to state media reports, the spokesperson said China “expresses serious concern” regarding the U.S. military’s actions, specifically condemning what they termed the “forcible control” of the Venezuelan president and first lady and “their transfer out of the country.”
The statement represents a significant diplomatic intervention by China in the ongoing Venezuelan crisis. Beijing framed the incident as a violation of established international protocols, asserting that the operation contravenes “international law and the basic norms in international relations and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.”
