It was a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape on Tuesday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), newly adopted by a coalition of opposition forces, appointed former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola as interim national secretary.
Prominent opposition politicians including ex-Vice Preside not Atiku Abubakar and a former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, have arrived at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja for a media conference of the emerging opposition coalition.
Other key political figures sighted at the venue include a former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; a former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi; Senator Dino Melaye; a former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung; publisher and PDP chieftain, Dele Momodu; Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party; and a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha.
Also in attendance is a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd.).
The coalition, which cuts across the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, Social Democratic Party and other political interests, is meeting under the platform of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group has adopted the ADC as the political vehicle to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress at the polls.
A former Senate President, David Mark, who recently resigned his membership of the PDP, is expected to lead the media conference as the newly appointed interim national chairman of the ADC.
A former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has also been named interim national secretary of the coalition-backed ADC.
A major shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape unfolded on Tuesday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), newly adopted by a coalition of opposition forces, appointed former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola as interim national secretary.
The announcement was made during a strategic meeting of key opposition figures in Abuja.
The appointments, though yet to be formally ratified, are expected to be officially confirmed at a follow-up meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
Kola Ologbondiyan, a former aide to Mark and ex-national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirmed the development in a post on X.
According to him, “African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been adopted as the political party for the coalition. The party has elected Sen. David Mark as the Interim National Chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as the Interim National Secretary.”
In his acceptance remarks, Aregbesola declared that the ADC must set itself apart from the country’s traditional political structure by becoming an ideologically-driven platform.
“Our political landscape is plagued by parties that lack ideological depth. They are empty shells merging and splitting, not over policy or principle, but over power and personality. There is little regard for the people, and even less for the country.
“That is not the kind of party we must be. That is not the kind of party I will serve. We must be the party that talks about public education and actually builds schools. That speaks of security and supports real policies to keep our communities safe. That believes in jobs and works to create them. That stands for Nigeria not just during elections, but in everyday governance”, he said.
