Even at his age when many of his contemporaries have retired and some have even died, controversial social critic and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, Charly Boy is by daily increasing in his activities as a Social Engineer according to how he described himself in the interview where he talked extensively about Tinubu administration, his relationship with Obasanjo and 999 his soon to be launched book.
Your Recent Romance Which Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Has Sent Tongues Wagging Especially When You’re Seen As A Major Critic of Nigeria’s Politics And Its Government, What Do You Want To Tell Us About This?
It’s not new as you assumed. My relationship with Obasanjo has been before my father died. You should know that one thing about me is that, I love to be closer to the elderly people in order to pick one or two things. I did that with my father where I gained a lot of wisdom which I’m applying to my life functions as I grow everyday. Obasanjo is a man I have much respect for, a man I doff my cap for, for being as boisterous as he is at this age. It’s a challenge for me to see a man at that age still walking and participating in activities that most 50/60 years old men cannot do.
I see it as a challenge to gather and learn from him what has been keeping him fit at that stage. He’s also a man that has the interest of Nigeria at heart and we share that in common.
The Last Time You Published A Book Was The Release Of ‘My Private Part ‘ And Now You Are About To Launch Another Book Also With A Controversy Title; 999. What’s The Idea Behind 999?
You know it is stated in the Bible, I think 2 Corinthians 5 which states: “Old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”. There is time for everything in man’s life. And as I often said, there’s time and season in everybody’s life. There will be time while growing that you’ll prefer to eat only garri and at the same time some people will like taking only plantain. 999 is the beginning, a new chapter and another stage of life, I don enter the final stage of development , Ok and all I need now is peace, joy, tranquility around me. Because I don go simple and that’s why I don’t do some waka-waka again, now 7pm, I don go sleep. I don dey see too far.
So When Are We Looking At For The Launch Of The Book?
The launch is coming up at Mike Adenuga French Cultural Center. It’s going to be an exclusive event, we are going to make a lot of noise about it but that doesn’t an everybody event. It’s strictly exclusive event. Na Baba OBJ dey invite people. One or two of my friends are coming though but it an exclusive launch.
As An Observer, A Critic and An Activist That You’ve Been All These While, What’s Your Assessment Of This Present Administration?
Tinubu administration is the worst ever. This is a government of very murderous people, a government of criminality. The most incompetent, just like Fela talked, one yeye boy rolling in one yeye corner.
How can the best of us sit all down and be ruled by the worst of us? That goes to tell me that truly Our Mumu never stop.
Are These Feelings Of Yours Expressed In The Book?
Yeah, a lot of my feelings about different things, you go read and after the launch. 999 is not about Charly Boy only it’s about all of us. Our shortcomings, our hypocrisies, our fuck ups, our bitterness and many other things. It’s about us but put together and published by Charly Boy for all of us to see.
You Were A Prominent Supporter Of Peter Obi In The Last Election, What Will You Say About Him Now That Most Nigerians Now Call Him A Political Prostitute Jumping From One Party To Another?
Everybody is entitled to his/her opinion. I will not agree with your statement that most Nigerians. If you say most, that means you’re talking about 50% Nigerians and it’s not true. It’s a bloody lie, you know we Nigerians mould our lives just the way we think, we don’t share uniform thoughts. My late father once called me and said son, this your Charly Boy of a thing won’t work. He made me realized that people are incapable of deep thoughts, critical thinking and my mission might be misunderstood. So that’s why you would just wake up and think Nigerians are the same. No some people reserve their opinions.
So What Do You See Or Envisage About This Present Administration?
This government cannot last, it can never last because you don’t build on a rubbish foundation and expect a strong structure. It’s a structure built on weak and rotten foundation, including Obasanjo ‘s government. But I see Obasanjo differently not because he’s my friend. Obasanjo see things in different perspectives and most times misconstrued. If you look and rate Nigeria’s democracy since 1999, this man seems to be the only President that has been able to deliver highest percentage of what Nigerians want.
Obasanjo is blunt, he talks just what is in him and do what he talks without fear or favour, those are the qualities of Charly Boy too and that’s why it’s easy for us to roll.
Back To The Roles Being Played By Other Activists….
(Cuts in)…See, I don’t like that word ‘activists’. That is why I don’t like being called an activist. Many of them are out there just to make money. There are cashtivists working under the guise of being Activists that is why I prefer to be called a Social Engineer. I love them all because it shows that the youths are conscious of what is happening in Nigeria. I once said it that it will take the efforts of our exceptional youths to salvage this country and we thank God they are springing up.
As I am now, my body is not as it is 20 years ago, so as I’m leaving gradually, let the youths start taking over until the wrong is corrected.
Lastly, As You’re Getting Older, Are You Grooming Followers or What Are Your Plans To Ensure This Crusade Continues!
That’s why I’m called The Area Fada, I told you it will take the efforts of our exceptional youths to salvage Nigeria, they are there watching all we are doing and much prepared to take after us.
