The body of 20-year-old Miss Favour Agbro from Delta State—who reportedly took her own life after accusing Mr Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as Odogwu of Asaba, of rape—was exhumed on Tuesday for a post-mortem as investigators continue to probe the circumstances of her death.

Human rights campaigner Israel Joe announced the development on social media, saying the autopsy was performed by the investigative team together with qualified pathologists.

He added that the examination took place with all relevant parties present, including Ogbonna’s lawyer. Joe said he and another activist travelled to Agbaro in Ughelli North Local Government Area, where Favour had been buried, to oversee preparations for the exhumation.

They met the deceased’s father and extended family, who arranged to have the remains removed for the autopsy.

Joe described an emotional moment during the process when Favour’s twin sister insisted on placing food at the graveside before the body was exhumed.

According to him, the sister brought sardines and bread, saying she had dreamt her late sister was hungry, and the family’s request to place the food in the grave prior to the autopsy was permitted.

“The autopsy has just been conducted on the deceased Miss Favour Agbro by the investigating team and competent pathologists with the presence of all parties, including the lawyer of Odogwu Asaba,” Joe wrote.

He also thanked the public for supporting the investigation and standing with the family, pledging to follow the case until justice is achieved.

The findings from the autopsy will form part of the ongoing inquiry into Favour’s death.

Favour reportedly died by suicide after alleging she had been raped by Odogwu of Asaba, a 44-year-old social media content creator, who she said lured her to a hotel in Asaba—the capital of Delta State—and assaulted her.

Prior to her death, Favour posted a video that circulated widely on social media in which she described the alleged rape, saying the suspect had enticed her with promises of financial help, covered her mouth, assaulted her and later boasted about taking her virginity.

She is said to have made that emotional recording before ingesting a poisonous substance; the Delta State Police Command subsequently announced the arrest of the content creator. In the video, Favour warned that viewers would not see her alive again.
