EFCC Chairman Olukayode Reveals How ‘Yahoo Boys’ Stole N7.2m From A Serving Judge’s Account

Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede has revealed that internet scammers, popularly known as Yahoo Boys, stole over ₦7.2 million from the bank account of a serving judge in the middle of the night.
Speaking during the presentation of two books authored by retired High Court judge Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye, Olukayode said the judge called him around 1 a.m. after receiving multiple debit alerts.
According to him, the money had been saved over six years to fund her child’s education.
“Before she knew it, she had been scammed of about ₦7.2 million.”
The EFCC Chairman disclosed that the commission recovered the entire amount before 6 p.m. the same day, using the incident to stress the growing threat of cybercrime.
“When you become a direct victim, that is when you’ll know that something has to be done.”
Olukayode urged stronger collaboration among law enforcement agencies, the judiciary and the public to tackle financial crimes, adding that Nigeria can overcome the challenge through collective action.
He also called on lawmakers and legal experts to review existing laws to address challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in criminal investigations.
At the event, former Attorney-General of the Federation Kanu Agabi (SAN) urged anti-graft agencies to intensify efforts to recover looted public funds kept abroad, while Wole Olanipekun (SAN) called for stricter enforcement of cybercrime laws. DSS Director-General Tosin Ajayi said securing convictions would serve as a stronger deterrent against cybercrime.
