Osun University Releases Circumstances Surrounding The Sudden Death of A Law Student

As the remains of Miss Grace Osunlakin, a final-year student of the College of Law, Osun State University (UNIOSUN), was been taken to her hometown, Modakeke, for burial, many questions have aroused on the cause of her death.

Meanwhile, the management of UNIOSUN has released a preliminary report detailing the events surrounding the unfortunate death of the student.

According to the report, Grace Osunlakin was a final-year student of the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Faculty of Liberal Studies, College of Law, Ifetedo Campus. She had successfully completed her final-year project defence on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at about 1:15 p.m., before a panel chaired by the Head of Department, Dr. Ademolu Adenuga.

The University stated that following her defence, Grace interacted with her supervisor and fellow students before returning to her off-campus residence. It noted that she showed no visible signs of illness while on campus that day.

The institution further revealed that Grace had been identified as an asthmatic patient since her 100-level days, with the condition documented in her medical records at the University Health Centre, Ifetedo Campus. The records showed that she last received treatment at the University Health Services on March 26, 2026.

According to testimonies from her friend and coursemate, Miss Durosinmi Mariam, Grace returned from a Christian fellowship later that evening and complained of stomach pain.

She reportedly later experienced distress, leading to efforts to seek medical assistance.

The report stated that attempts to move her for medical attention were affected by the Oro ritual observed in the Ifetedo community that night, which restricted movement. She was eventually taken on a motorcycle to the nearby Community Health Centre at Ikija, Ifetedo.

The University clarified that Grace was not taken to the institution’s Health Centre during the incident.

Upon arrival at the health facility, she reportedly lost consciousness and was attended to. Her colleagues immediately contacted relevant lecturers, including her project supervisor, Dr. Oyeyipo Eyitayo, and the Acting Head of Peace and Conflict Studies, Dr. Olawale Gbadeyan.

The lecturers arrived at the health centre, where the matron on duty confirmed her passing in the presence of her friends.

Seeking further confirmation, the lecturers, alongside some students including the College President, Moshood Ali Olaide, proceeded with her to Goshen Specialist Hospital, Ondo, where she was confirmed dead on arrival by the attending doctor.

Her remains were thereafter deposited at Divine Haven Funeral Home, Ondo, at about 1:21 a.m.

The University management stated that throughout the process, the Head of Department and the Dean of the Faculty remained in constant communication with those involved.

The institution reiterated that Grace was an asthmatic patient and stressed that she was not taken to the University Medical Centre on the night of her demise.

As Modakeke mourns, many remember Grace Osunlakin as a promising young woman whose academic journey and potential represented hope for the future. Her passing remains a painful loss to her family, colleagues, and the wider community.
