Fake Agency Brouhaha: Guild Warns Against Another Scandal Without Consequences, Calls for Credible Investigation Panel

The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to take immediate steps to address allegations surrounding disputed budgetary entries, alleged intimidation, and claims of financial demands involving a public office.
In a statement issued on the matter, through its National president Comr. Akpovoke Otiti and it’s National Secretary Comr Clinton Uba, said allowing officials occupying sensitive positions to remain in office while serious allegations are being investigated could undermine public confidence and weaken the principle of accountability.
The Guild argued that stepping aside during an investigation should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt, but as a necessary measure to protect the integrity of the process and allow investigators unhindered access to relevant documents and evidence.
“Public trust cannot survive where allegations are treated as normal. The investigation must be allowed to breathe, and the truth must be allowed to emerge without fear or interference,” GOMEP-NG stated.
The media body warned that the matter should not become another national controversy that generates widespread public discussion only to disappear without meaningful action or consequences.
GOMEP-NG called on President Tinubu to establish an independent investigative panel made up of credible professionals and institutions capable of delivering a transparent and impartial outcome.
The Guild stressed that the panel should not be composed of individuals perceived as loyalists or persons who may compromise the credibility of the exercise, but should include representatives of civil society organisations, forensic auditors, anti-corruption agencies, professional media bodies, and, where necessary, international observers.
According to GOMEP-NG, Nigerians deserve an investigation process that is free from intimidation, political influence, and institutional bias.
The Guild maintained that the strength of any democracy is measured by the ability of its institutions to uphold accountability, regardless of the status or influence of those involved.
