Lagos Police Opens Investigation After Vigilante Group Arrest Four Women

Authorities in Lagos have opened an investigation following the apprehension of four women by a vigilante group in Ilupeju. The incident which occurred on August 23, 2023, stems from allegations of same-sex practices which is an offence in Nigeria.

The women — Adeyemi Handu, Nosimat Olowookere, Sekinat Ajenifuja, and Rhoda Adesanya — were reportedly assaulted before being transferred to the Police Station in Ilupeju Lagos. They remain in custody, with bail denied pending further inquiries.
During our correspondence with the police, we gathered that the detainees provided names of five other individuals allegedly connected to the matter with different kinds of pornographic evidences found on them. Efforts are underway for the arrest of the listed – Abosede Animashaun, Chinwe Okafor, Adebimpe Monite, Rashidat Bello, and Mary Nwachukwu.

Local accounts suggest the vigilante group acted on a tip-off about a gathering at a residence on Oke Arin Street. The police spokesperson confirmed this and urged residents to avoid vigilante actions, stressing that suspected offenders should be reported directly to law enforcement personnels for due process.

Nigerian same-sex laws are not only still relevant, but actively and severely enforced. The Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act (SSMPA) outlaws same-sex relationships, marriages, and LGBTQ+ organizations. Punishments range up to 14 years in prison.
